Making the Most of the Season

Happy December! It’s crazy to me that it’s the end of the year & we’re already at another Christmas. We’ve still got some shopping, baking, and decorating to do (actually, we just finished decorating the tree!). There’s lots going on this time of year and it can be really easy to get overwhelmed. If you do, I just want to remind you to take a step back. Head over to this post if you want to read my thoughts on how to have a chaos free(ish) Christmas.

While it can be chaotic we do like to make the most of it. Here’s some things we like to do and/or are hoping to do to celebrate and enjoy this time of year!

We countdown. My kids generally have a little advent calendar (you know, the chocolate kind) to help them countdown the days.
Advent. We also do an advent book or readings of some sort that point to why we celebrate this time of year. The last few years with the kids we have done the one that goes with “The Jesus Storybook Bible”. You can find out more about it here. What’s great about this is that if you already have the bible the advent guide is free to download or follow online! This year we’re going to follow along with a weekly advent that our church is doing and has put together for the kids. It’s got activities for them to do along with a bible focus each week, so it should be great!

***Last year I went through this one with a few friends and really enjoyed it. I thought about finding and buying another for this year but wasn’t quite on the ball. We actually have a book by Paul David Tripp called “Come Let Us Adore Him” that has a reading for each day, so I am going to do my best to read through that.

Christmas books, movies & shows are a given this time of year and we take full advantage of it! We like to have little movie nights here and there and you can bet that every night we’re reading a Christmas book from our stash.
• We often will decorate a gingerbread house.
• We bake Christmas cookies!
Christmas light drive! We love going out to see all the light displays. We generally save this to do sometime the week before Christmas.
Christmas puzzle. Ok, where my puzzle people at? I just picked up the cutest one & can’t wait to do it!

Hot chocolate bar. This time of year I always like to set up a little hot chocolate bar and put out the Christmas mugs. My kids love having hot chocolate in their Santa mugs. I mean, who wouldn’t?!

Crafts. I’ll generally try and grab some fun crafty things from the dollar store that will keep the kids busy. You know, for the times when I need something to keep them busy. They’re great to have on hand & they can have some really cute things this time of year.

Those are just a few things we like to do or attempt to do this time of year.

What do you like to do to make the most of the season? I always like hearing what other people do & their family traditions!
