Our Mini Garden
This year we’re attempting a small little garden in our backyard & it’s quickly become my new little baby. I got it started the beginning of May and I absolutely love checking on it and seeing the progress. My kids are also enjoying it right along with me, which I love! It’s a little highlight in our days.
I’m sure we could have built our garden box but my friend and I split a two pack of these garden boxes from Costco. It was extremely easy to put together. Once I got the frame up I lined the bottom of the garden box with cardboard and then I put a layer of landscape cloth on top. Double protection to hopefully keep the weeds at bay!
Next I added the soil & some compost and we got planting!
What did we plant?
From seed we planted: carrots, bush beans, kale, and lettuce. Then I grabbed a tomato plant and a pepper plant that were already started. We also have a strawberry plant in there as well - someone dropped this off on my doorstep when they found out I was doing a garden (so thoughtful!)! My kids are extra excited about the strawberries.
I also planted a few marigolds after reading they help to attract the good bugs! They’re also supposed to be a good companion for some veggies. Not to mention they add a little bit of pretty!
And that’s it. That’s our little garden. I do have some herbs, but they’re living on the deck (basil, parsley & cilantro). I also planted some sunflowers, zinnias, and cosmos - these are just behind the little fences outside the garden box. I’m really hoping they grow!
Those cute little fences are from the dollar store!
Everything seems to be growing quite well so far. And like I said, it’s been a little spot of joy in our days. We’re just learning as we go over here and I quite like it!
Do you have a garden? What do you like to plant for veggies? Any must know tips, send them my way!
