The Benefits of Creating A Skincare Routine
Almost two years ago, I made it one of my New Years goals to create a little skincare routine for myself. That may sound silly, but I was feeling like my skin was dull & tired looking and I honestly wasn’t very good at taking care of it. I was lucky if I took the time to wash my face at the end of the night.
So now, almost two years later, I’ve got a great skincare routine going & it’s just one way that I’ve been taking better care of myself. Just like anything, if you’re wanting to see improvement and results when it comes to your skin, then you have to be consistent. Obviously there are times I miss washing my face or skip certain steps, but overall I can find an extra 5 minutes (or less!) in my mornings and evenings to do this. And I’ve noticed a big difference in my skin overall.
Plus, as a busy mom it’s helped me either pull myself together (in a better way) to start the day or given me a little moment to wind down at the end of the day.
***Side note: As a mom of 3 littles, I’ve been guilty of putting myself at the very bottom of the list or not even really putting myself on the list at all. Yes, there are seasons. But, I also need to take care of myself - so I can better take care of my family. I think we all know this, but it’s really easy to put yourself on the back burner and not properly take care of yourself - I’m working on this!
Ok, here’s a quick breakdown of what I generally do most mornings & evenings. Like I said, there are times when I skip a step or two (I am not perfect at this), but for the most part this is what I follow. Doing these 4 steps takes maybe 5min max. If I have time to do this with 3 little kids underfoot, I’m sure you can find time too!
Cleanse - This removes make-up and other impurities from your skin (cleanser/cleansing oil/cleansing balm). This cleanser and this charcoal bar are current faves for washing my face.
Prep - Get your skin ready for the treatment step & maximum product absorption (toner/essence). I am a huge fan of this essence!
Treat - This is where you focus on a specific skincare issue (serum/mask/peel). I love the ever popular All Bright C Serum!
Protect - Lock in the moisture (cream/oil/moisturizer/eye cream). For everyday moisturizer, this is my fave.
These 4 steps are designed to work together to deliver the best possible results when it comes improving your skin.
Some nights I’ll add an extra step, like a mask or a peel, if I’m feeling like my skin needs a little extra help! The times I do add a mask it adds about 10min to my routine. I’ll often plop a mask on my face in the evening and finish up some nightly tasks around the house while it sets and does it’s magic - a great form of multitasking!
Why did I choose Beautycounter?
I had heard about Beautycounter quite a long time ago but never tried it. It had always interested me but I just never got around to making a purchase. When I decided to take better care of my skin & was going to attempt to create a little routine I decided to jump in and give it a go.
I loved the overall mission of the company (beauty should be good for you!) and I especially loved that fact that they have created a Never List. This is a list compiled of approx. 1800 ingredients that they won’t use in their products. You can read more on that here.
It feels great knowing that the products I’m using & putting on my skin have cleaner ingredients than most. The things we put in and on our bodies matter and this is just a small way I’m working towards swapping out my products for cleaner ones. Note, I am not perfect at this and it is a total work in progress. Do I still have products and things in my home that aren’t considered clean, organic, etc.? Yes. However, I do believe that every little swap helps in making a difference in our overall health.
So, whether you’re a busy mom like me, or someone who just needs to take a bit of time at the beginning or the end of each day to look after yourself, I hope you find something to do just that. Take care of yourself however you need to. I love the little skincare routine I’ve created as one way to do that!
